Small Town Schools and Security

Smaller rural area schools, that can't afford high tech security equipment, resort to low tech measures to keep their students and faculty safe.

"What we try to do as teachers is just encourage them and make them feel as safe as we can, says music teacher Tara Hansen."

And patrol by the school's principal, may be as good as it gets.

"Our principal is constantly walking the hallways trying to make sure there's nothing unusual going on, adds Hansen"

This small school doesn't have millions to spend on high tech security equipment, instead, it relies on low-tech ways to ensure children are safe.

"We tend to know the kids and if something is going on with the children, I think that may be more of an advantage than the high tech is, said Principal James Kight."

Kight says he has talked to staff about their security plans in case of an emergency.

"Remind them to be extra vigilant of people coming in the building, when the door opens we hear it. "

Kight adds it hasn't been a problem in the past with leaving doors and gates open, but now they will have police on campus everyday.

Teachers are on high alert, but say they feel as safe as they can at the school.

Comments

Redfield Principal James Kight is to be commended for his years of service to public education and especially, the Redfield Schools. Ask any child that has ever attended this school and they will tell you Mr Kight was and is vigilant and knew where children were and what was going on. Anything can happen at any school, but less likely in a neighborhood school where people know each other. We are paying the price for small school consolidation where a child becomes a number among hundreds at the same grade level. This is why Redfield is fighting now to save this high performing school.
