It happened Thursday night shortly after 11 o'clock at the Conoco, 10200 North Rodney Parham Road, in the Colony West neighborhood.
The 33-year-old clerk suffered a bruise when he was hit in the eye by one of two suspects after they couldn't get the safe open, according to the police report.
The clerk told police one of the men was armed with a handgun when they came into the business and one of them jumped the counter. The clerk placed the cash drawer on the counter and the men took the money before demanding to know "Where is the rest of the money?" When the clerk told them it was in the safe, one of the men tried to open it but failed.
The police report says one of the suspects then told the other one to "get him, bust him" and he hit the clerk with his fist. The clerk then swung at the man, struggled with him and yanked off the skull cap that covered his head. The suspect then tried to hide his face as he and the other man ran from the store, headed east towards the back of the business.
Police describe the suspects as black men, both 20 to 25 years old, about 5'9", with one weighing about 250 and the other about 160. They both wore gloves and were dressed all in black. One of them was wearing "Chuck Taylor" shoes, the report said.
Investigators are reviewing the surveillance video and also collected the skull cap one of the men left behind as evidence.
