The great-grandparents of a two-year-old child who died after being left in a hot car have been found guilty of negligent homicide.

According to the Springdale City Attorney's Office William and Margette Staten were both sentenced to serve one year in Washington County jail.

On August 3rd, the Statens decided to take their great-grandson, Joniah Chronister with them to Walmart.

The couple said they forgot they took the child with them and left him in the car while they went shopping.

The Statens initially felt they had been in the store for about forty-five minutes but an investigation found they had actually been inside for more than two hours.

According to the National Weather Service, the temperature outside of the car that day was over a hundred degrees and close to 150 degrees inside the car.

When police arrived on scene, the boy did not have a pulse and was taken to Northwest Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
