The Little Rock School District Board of Directors voted Monday for Tommy Branch to fill the vacancy in Zone 6.

Branch, a Democrat, recently ran for State Representative in District 30. He lost a runoff to eventual winner Charles Armstrong.

He's a graduate of Philander Smith College where he studied in the areas of music and political science, earning a degree in Business Administration with a concentration on Organizational Management, according to a campaign website.

The previous board member, Michael "Pete" Peterson, died a few weeks ago.

Peterson, 63, had retired from LRSD in 2010 after 38 years, serving as a coach, vice principal and principal, before joining the board of directors. Peterson was elected to his first term, representing Zone 6, in September.

The four candidates interviewing for the position were Branch, Laveta Wills-Hale, Dr. Robert Williams and Andrew C. Pritt.
