Alarming your home can be an expensive chore however especially this time of the year it could not only keep your family safe, but protect those expensive gifts everyone works so hard to buy.

Security experts told KARK this time of the year when the sun sets sooner, and expensive gifts are stuffed in closets, a home with no system is a sitting duck.

"A lot of times we go to the houses after there's been a situation or problem and not before," said Steve Kabat the owner of Interactive Security Solutions.

"Everybody thinks about it of course after the fact," added Rick Wheeler the owner of B-Safe Security.

In a tough economy when people are more concerned with putting food on the table, security experts like Wheeler and Kabat said, state-of-the-art systems aren't on the list of important purchases.

"It definitely takes a back burner until something happens," said Kabat. "We hear that a lot."

But they said it should be a top priority.

"Next thing you know six months later they're giving us a call course they've already lost a bunch of stuff," said Kabat.

"And in this economy," added Wheeler," Where it's hard to get what you have people want to protect it and take care of it.

No matter how much it may set you back in the beginning both men said it'll be one holiday purchase you definitely won't regret.

Along with an alarm system they suggest not leaving boxes for those expensive items you recently purchased in front of your home for trash collection.

Also to not post your last name outside of your home and to make sure it appears someone is always home.
