Hampton Plans Special Mayoral Election

It's been over a month since one South Arkansas mayor's resignation and now the city is preparing for a special election to select his replacement.

Former Hampton Mayor Phillip Swofford resigned earlier this fall after much controversy surrounding his ability to lead.

The city clerk says she is working on an ordinance for the council's approval before the election can take place.

Once the council approves the ordinance, the special election will take place 60 days later.

Originally the council decided to appoint a mayor instead of having a special election, but many members of the community have expressed their desire for the position.

No word yet on when the ordinance will go before the council.

Swofford resigned after prosecutors told him to resign or possibly face charges for allegations that he wrote an illegitimate eviction note for one of his tenants and asked the police chief to deliver it.
