Tossed Tires, TVs and Toilets Removed in Cleanup at Lake Maumelle

Tossed tires, televisions and toilets were among the items picked up at Lake Maumelle in a cleanup operation on Saturday.

Central Arkansas Water (CAW) sponsored its 5th Annual "Southshore Sweep," as part of the Great Arkansas Cleanup.

Over 35 CAW staff and community volunteers joined together to remove trash and debris from the public-use areas in the Lake Maumelle Watershed. The three-hour cleanup collected more than 30 cubic yards of trash, including over 100 bags of garbage, 30 tires, and a number of discarded televisions and toilets.

Stephanie Hymel, CAW's Stewardship Coordinator, stated "This was a great event where the utility and the community came together to help protect and improve the drinking water supply for over 400,000 people across the region."

Lake Maumelle is the primary water source that provides drinking water for 16 communities in central Arkansas.

The southshore area was chosen for the cleanup because it has some of the most popular public-use areas on the lake. In addition to cleaning these areas, the event helps to raise community awareness about the need to reduce litter and keep our water supply and recreational areas clean.

The Southshore Sweep is a continuation of CAW's commitment to natural resource preservation and protection in the Lake Maumelle Watershed, including the promotion of low-impact techniques for development and the use of controlled burns and selective thinning to improve the forests surrounding the lake.
