The situation is being discussed in tonight's board meeting, along with a raise for teachers that was proposed earlier this week.
According to tonight's agenda posted online, the dropping enrollment numbers for the LRSD total 770 students from the 2008-09 school year to the current school year. More than half (454) of those students have left the school district since last year. At tonight's meeting they are set to talk about why the students are leaving.
Statistics show enrollment at 25,910 at the start of the 2008-09 school year, and 25,140 at the start of the 2012-13 school year.
Most of the students were lost at the high school and middle school level.
On the bright side, the district saw an increase of more than 230 students at the elementary level over the five-year period.
The number one reason (76-percent) why students left the district was because they moved away. Very few (three-percent in each category) transferred to private, charter or home schools.
