Arkansas Political Legends Talk Politics, 2-Party System

A pair of Arkansas political legends took the stage to talk politics at the annual supper at the Old State House Museum Thursday night.

The Democratic former Governor and Senator David Pryor, along with Republican former Congressman Ed Bethune discussed politics along the theme of "Two Party Arkansas, Then and Now."

With the strong possibility of a GOP takeover in the state legislature, the two reflected on how state politics could change and the importance of cooperation.

"A sad thing has happened over the last few years, I think," said Senator Pryor. "Compromise has become a dirty word. We would not have social security, we would not have medicare, we would not have the GI Bill had it not been for compromise."

"The good thing about it is, particularly for those of you in the media, is that when you have the two parties checking on each other, we get the straight answers," Representative Bethune said.
