A new study suggests an ingredient found in red wine might help protect against diabetes. The study in mice suggests the ingredient, called resveratrol, could improve insulin sensitivity. Last year, researchers found large amounts of resveratrol helped obese mice eat a high-fat diet – and still lead long, healthy lives.
Many experts agree that ingredients in red wine appear to act as antioxidants and could have the protective effects on the cardiovascular system when consumed in moderation.
Dr. Keith Churchwell of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center says, “Moderation is almost always key in any type of medication, any type of lifestyle management…and alcohol is a great example.”
The key ingredient that gives red wine its apparent health benefits is found in the skins of red grapes.
