Jessica Dean Healthy Living: Aspartame Cancer Research

New research linking an artificial sweetener to cancer has raised questions from the beginning. The study turned some heads when it first came out, and outside researchers have reacted especially strongly to it.

The study linked aspartame, an artificial sweetener used in diet sodas to cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Now, outside experts are saying the study and its findings are not reliable. The hospital where the study was conducted even released a statement calling the study weak.

Aspartame has been in diet sodas since the 80's and was approved as a general purpose sweetener in 1996. The food and drug administration says its approval was based on more than 100 studies.

The FDA released a statement saying while the study raises issues that need to be further investigated, it finds no reason to conclude aspartame is unsafe.

Unfortunately, this study only clouded the issue instead of finding any clear answer when it comes to this sweetener.
