The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department now has some extra help to protect the area.

A new K-9 officer was introduced at a press conference on Friday.

The Sheriff introduced Sergeant "Reis," a 3-year-old male Belgian Malinois, which the department received on Oct. 12.

He's currently trained to detect marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine.

He and handler Sergeant Arnold will complete basic training before helping with the county's war on drugs.

"So what we're telling our drug dealers out here is that 'look, the playing field has changed. We're out here looking for you and we're going to be more aggressive,'"

The new K-9 program is funded by donations from businesses and lifelong citizens of Jefferson County.
