Violence, Drug Use and Sex among Topics of Conferences in Little Rock This Week

Violence, drug use and sex are among topics being discussed at two conferences in Little Rock this week.
The Center for Healing Hearts and Spirits (CHHS) will host both of them. The focus includes educating youth about sex and the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco, while adults will gain greater insight into the complexities of sexual assault and domestic violence.
The "2012 STOP Forum" is Thursday, October 18 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Darragh Center Auditorium in the Main Library at 100 Rock Street in downtown Little Rock.
The forum is designed to:
"And, unfortunately, statistics show that a woman is forcibly raped every 60 seconds in this country. We want Arkansans to know there is help if you're ever in a dangerous situation," Raynor said pointing to the rape crisis hotline at CHHS.
The rape crisis hotline phone number is 1-855-6-HELP-4-U.
On Saturday, October 20 CHHS will host the "That's What's Up: Sex, Lies, Drugs, Tobacco, Texting & the Truth About it All!" conference at the Bishop Leodis & Goldie Warren Family Life Center at 1200 Lewis Street in Little Rock from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Children and youth, ages 9-19 will enjoy several presentations designed to educate them about harsh realities involving peer pressure to have sex and use drugs and tobacco. Presenters will also empower the youth to make the right choices.
"We also have something for the parents. We are going to make sure they understand the text message slang they're children are using," Raynor said.
I've heard from parents who are shocked when they learn what some of the slang actually means."

- identify the best practices for intervention by multiple professionals who come into contact with domestic violence, sexual assault, and tobacco products remnants;
- discuss the complexity of domestic violence and sexual assault situations;
- recognize the signs of abuse and victimization;
- discuss how a coordinated community response benefits the victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault.
