Arkansas Ranchers Watching the Mail for Drought Grant Checks

By: KARK 4 News
Updated: October 3, 2012
Arkansas ranchers are watching the mail for drought grant checks.

During the coming weeks, the ranchers who qualified for the Livestock Assistance Grant Program will receive their money from the Arkansas Agriculture Department.

About 8,500 applicants met the program's requirements.

In August, Governor Mike Beebe pledged $2,000,000 from the Governor's Disaster Fund to provide relief for Arkansas ranchers during persistent drought conditions. The final amount allocated from the Disaster Fund was $2,125,000.

Throughout 2012, cattle, sheep and goat producers have found it difficult to locate, grow or afford hay and other forage for their animals.

The Arkansas Agriculture Department is working closely with the Department of Finance and Administration to process and send out the grant checks. They hope to mail all of them within the next three weeks.
