Tales of the Crypt Tonight at LR's Mount Holly Cemetery

It might be a few weeks early, but a spooky event in Little Rock tonight can literally get you in the "spirit" of Halloween.

"Tales of the Crypt," is an annual living history presentation set inside the gates of the city's historic Mount Holly Cemetery, located alongside I-630 at 10th and Broadway in downtown.

"Tales of the Crypt" was started 18 years ago as a project of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Association, Mount Holly Cemetery Association and Parkview Arts-Science Magnet High School's Drama Department.

Each year, students research the historical figures, then write and memorize a monologue from their lives - in full, historically-accurate costumes.

The performances start at 5:30 p.m. and continue to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Those featured this year include:

• David O. Dodd, Confederate boy martyr
• John & Quatie Ross, the Cherokee Chief that lost his wife in Arkansas when she gave her blanket to save a child on the Trail of Tears
• Catherine Wilshire
• Albert & Mary Stocking
• Richard Flanigan
• Mrs. Blackburn
• George & Julia Basham
• Edward Payson Washburn
• Dr. William & Addie Green
• Nate & Anne Warren 
• John & Lucinda Kumpe 
• Frances Hanger
• Jane Eliza Woodruff
• John Adams
• Louisa & Philena Brown

Tours through the cemetery will feature 15 stops at the gravesites of the individuals being portrayed.

The not-too-scary event promises glimpse of real Arkansas history told in as a story - and attracts as many as 1,000 visitors each year.
