Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock has released an official statement on the shooting death of a student near the campus last week.

It states:

On Thursday, September 27th, an Arkansas Baptist College (ABC) student was the victim of a shooting by an unknown assailant.  Derek Olivier, a 19-year old freshman from New Iberia, Louisiana was standing around with a couple of other students who were changing a car tire on the corner of 16th & Bishop Street. Around 7:15 pm, an unknown assailant walked into the College's neighborhood and opened fire, striking Olivier. The perpetrator fled out of sight on foot. Olivier was taken by ambulance to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where he later died from his wounds.

The Little Rock Police Department is working closely with ABC Campus Security to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the shooting; however, no suspects are in custody at this time.

The College remains in contact with the Olivier family in New Iberia, LA, and conveys heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Grief counselors and local ministers have been working with students and faculty members, and will be available to all students who may need help in dealing with this loss and other problems they may be experiencing as a result of this tragic event. Residential Life personnel are also assisting students who live on campus in the residence halls.

The College plans to hold a memorial vigil for ABC faculty, staff and friends of Derek Olivier this week.
