The North Little Rock School District has been awarded a grant to improve literacy skills.

The district received over $473,000 from the Department of Education -- just one of 46 districts nationwide to receive the grant. It was the only district in Arkansas to receive it.

The award is part of the Innovative Approaches to Literacy Program to promote literacy learning in young children and motivating older children to read.

Part of the funding will be used to distribute free books to children and their families.

Two of the media specialist were instrumental in writing the grant.
