According to Bryant Police, Alert Recovering Repo employee Timothy David Smith of El Paso took his company wrecker into an apartment complex and loaded up a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe and drove away on May 15.
Officers stopped Smith just before 6:00 that same morning, but he handed them paperwork and told them he just repossessed the Tahoe, and since it hadn't yet been reported stolen, they let him go.
The owner called later that morning to report his vehicle stolen.
Last Wednesday, investigators learned about an accident on Highway 70 involving a red Dodge Ram wrecker truck matching the description of the one Smith was driving that night in May.
After reviewing dash cam video from the original traffic stop, officers determined that it was the same truck and were able to identify Smith as the suspect.
Smith was arrested at his home in El Paso without incident. He was taken to the Saline County Jail where his bail was set at $5,000.
