Some recruits of the Little Rock Police Department (LRPD) are busy this week with gun training.

Half of the total of 60 recruits were at the police training facility on Tuesday.

Their 24-week course began with studying the law, then moved on to the practical applications of it.

It isn't until the sixth week that recruits are able to handle a firearm.

"Then we take them out here and train both in marksmanship and combat style shooting," said LRPD Sergeant Chris Phillips. "So they're prepared for whatever situation they encounter on the street."

This class will graduate in December and the next recruit class begins immediately after that.
