The parade to kick off the Yell County Fair on Friday featured a somber moment.

For the first time in almost 30 years the parade's Grand Marshall, Fanny George, wasn't there.

The 99-year-old died last week, but her horse was led through the parade with Fanny's boots in its stirrups.

Fanny was born in Yell County in 1913 and was named Danville's Citizen of the Year for her many contributions to the town she loved.

The day was also named "Miss Fanny George Day" in her honor.
