Three Gravette Schools Evacuated After Gas Leak

By: KNWA-TV, Fayetteville
Updated: September 4, 2012
Hundreds of students were evacuated from three Gravette schools Tuesday morning after construction crews hit a gas line near the buildings.

A total of 1,275 schoolchildren from Glen Duffy Elementary, Upper Elementary and Gravette Middle School were rushed to a staging area away from the leak and transported by buses to buildings across town, according to Gravette Public School employees.

After teachers do a head count to make sure no one is missing, the children will eat lunch, while crews attempt to fix the leak.

Rich Davis, with SourceGas says the company was doing scheduled maintenance and repair on a high pressure gas line when a fitting cracked. Davis says the gas is continuing to be released, but a light breeze is dispersing it and it should not pose any health risks.

The company expects to fix the leak today, but school employees don't know if the kids will be able to return to class before school lets out.
