The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has given Uma Nagarajan, Ph.D., a researcher at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Research Institute, a $1.6 million grant that will fund a study working towards a vaccine for Chlamydia. Nagarajan and her team will embark on the five-year study starting this month, during which they will examine molecular pathways affected by Chlamydia trachomatis, the bacteria that causes the disease. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility among women.
Nagarajan and her team are hoping to achieve a molecular-level understanding of the disease in order to develop a proper cure. The study will continue through 2012.
