Use of SSRI's Safe During First Trimester of Pregnancy

 Two reports out today may help ease the minds of mothers-to-be who are suffering with depression.

Past studies raised concern about an increased risk of rare birth defects, but the studies involving thousands of women suggest the use of SSRI’s is safe during the first trimester of pregnancy. The studies to note a risk of rare heart defects to Zoloft and Paxil, but it was less than one percent.

Dr. Samantha Meltzer-Brody, a psychiatrist, says, “I’m much more scared of untreated post partum depression than I am of risks – very rare – unusual events occurring.”
