Saline County Circuit Clerk Dennis Milligan has reduced the cost of getting public records online from $95 to $10.
The circuit clerk's office has two kinds of records - court and land. Last year, Milligan put all court records on the Internet using the Arkansas Supreme Court's CourtConnect system.
Real estate records are currently only available online through a site run by the information Network of Arkansas (INA).
Until now, getting a document, such as a deed, online through the INA website required a $95 annual subscription fee. The main clients of this service are title companies and real estate attorneys.
Milligan said this charge is unfair to individuals who want a single document. He negotiated a new agreement with INA that allows a person to download a single real estate document for a one-time fee of $10.
"We had people who need a copy of a deed, but didn't want to pay $95 for it. We began looking at options and Information Network of Arkansas agreed to the reduced fee for those who don't want multiple documents," Milligan said. "This is just temporary. We will be providing an even better deal for people by the end of this year."
Later this year, the Saline County Circuit Clerk's Office will be putting all real estate documents online for free.
"Once our real estate records are online for free, all public documents in my office will be available on the Internet at no charge to the public," Milligan said.
