It happened Sunday around 5PM.
The White County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Matthew Van Winkle was shopping at the Searcy Walmart when he noticed a wanted felon also shopping.
Deputy Van Winkle confirmed with the White County Communications that Malcolm Hemmert, 26, had multiple arrest warrants.
When the deputy approached Hemmert and told him he was under arrest, the man then tried to run away. Hemmert was caught after a brief struggle.
Deputy Van Winkle removed a knife and sheath from Hemmert's possession. Units with the Searcy Police Department arrived shortly after to take Hemmert to the White County Detention Center.
Sheriff Ricky Shourd stated that he appreciates the hard work of Deputy Van Winkle both on duty as well as off-duty.
