After a fatal biking accident over the weekend, safety is on the minds of many cyclists.
Of course wearing a helmet is something most people are aware of, but the correct footwear could also make a huge difference.
"These pedal systems are made to be used with special shoes," said Luke Tibbett with Spokes Bike Shop in Little Rock, "With cleats made to clip in them."
When used correctly Tibbett said they're extremely safe.
"Once you're clipped in you have greater control of the bike because you're actually attached to it," he said.
This kind of pedal a cyclist was using when he was struck and killed by a truck this weekend.
According to police the victim, Jevon Newman, 30, was wearing flip-flops.
Little Rock was named one of the least friendly cities to bicyclists however witnesses said the accident wasn't the driver's fault. That Newman had clearly been having trouble riding on the bike.
"You can't ride correctly at all," said Tibbett. "There's no way to do that. They're made for special shoes with cleats... not flip flops. "
KARK photojournalist Josh Morgan tried his hand at riding this type of a bike in flip-flops.
Needless to say he had some major issues.
"Don't find yourself in start/stop situations," said Tibbett. "Like commuting, which is what he was doing, in the improper equipment."
Cyclists said a sometimes dangerous hobby can be made safer with the proper gear.
The driver in the accident is not facing charges.
