Severance Tax Concerns White County Residents

Signatures are due today for issues that could be on the November general election ballot, including the possible ballot question of an increase in the severance tax.

The tax is assessed on natural gas well developers and the land owners, and at least 15 White County residents have donated money in an effort to stop the measure.

Former Arkansas gubernatorial candidate and former natural gas executive Sheffield Nelson said he will turn in "an extent of 70,000 signatures," thus exceeding the state minimum 62,507 signatures to get the issue on the ballot.
