Deported Ex-Inmate Gets to Keep $800,000 Injury Award

A federal appeals court panel ruled a $813,000 award to a deported Mexican national who waited a month in an Arkansas prison for treatment on a broken leg will stand.

The Arkansas News Bureau reports the a three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis found the award to be generous but not excessive.

Jose Gonzalez was awarded the damages in connection with a lawsuit related to his 2004 imprisonment at the Federal Correctional Institution in Forrest City.

Gonzalez was injured during a prison softball game on July 28.  He was refused proper treatment until August 26.  Doctors testified he suffered long term injuries due to the improper care.
