Update: (July 27):
A Chicot County man accused of killing a Lake Village woman has been denied bond and remains in jail.

John Brooks, 49, is under arrest for the May beating death of Chicot County Tax Collector Nell Johnson, 73.

At a bond hearing for Brooks on Thursday, investigators testified against him.

Brooks is being held at the Ashley County Detention Center.

Update (June 19):

Tenth Judicial District Prosecutor Thomas Deen says it is "possible" that he will seek the death penalty against the man charged in the May 3 beating death and robbery of Chicot County Tax Collector Nell Johnson.

"It's definitely a possibility," Deen said. "I'll make a decision after I finish evaluating the case."

Deen has charged John Thomas Brooks, 49, of Lake Village, with capital murder, aggravated residential burglary, and aggravated robbery.

Capital murder is punishable by life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

Original Story (June 11):

There's been an arrest in the May murder of the Chicot County Tax Collector.

The Chicot County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) says John Brooks, 48, of Lake Village is charged with capital murder in Johnson's death.

Nell Johnson, 72, was found beaten to death inside her home.

The CCSO says Johnson died from a head wound.

Investigators say Brooks is the father of Johnson's grand-daughter-in-law.

The motive for Johnson's killing is believed to be robbery.

The Arkansas State Crime Lab says DNA collected from the scene matches Brooks'.

Brooks is being held in the Ashley County Jail without bail.

There are other charges pending against him.
