Delta Airlines has made an unprecedented purchase in hopes of slashing its largest single expense - jet fuel.

The airline plans to purchase the Trainer Refinery from Conoco Phillips for $150 million. It's expected the deal would allow Delta to cut its fuel bill by $300 million each year.

Delta's Monroe Energy subsidiary will spend $100 million to make changes to the refinery to maximize the production of jet fuel.
