John L. Smith has been formally introduced by the University of Arkansas as its new head football coach.

At a Tuesday afternoon news conference, Athletic Director Jeff Long told reporters the selection of Coach Smith is "the right decision for the future of the football program."

A minute later, Coach Smith, wearing a Razorback lapel pin, stood in front of the microphone, saying "we're gonna play for a national title," and "let's make it a special year."

Smith cited the attendance of 45,000 fans at the recent spring game as an indication that the team has solid support.

"Let's lock arms, forge ahead and win a national championship," Smith said before turning the news conference over to reporters' questions.
