breaking news
Batesville schools have agreed to annex
the Sulphur Rock School District.
The decision was made at a special meeting last night, and
leaders of both school districts are happy about the move.
Sulphur Rock is the largest school district required by a new
state law to consolidate. It had a two-year average enrollment of
347 students. The law requires schools to maintain a three-year
average of 350 students to avoid consolidation.
Sulphur Rock didnt have to consolidate initially because it
didnt have a third-year enrollment total yet, but officials
decided later to go ahead with consolidation. Unlike other larger
districts that were reticent to annex smaller ones, Batesville was
happy to take on Sulphur Rock. It hasnt had the same academic and
money problems other small districts have.
