A new state scholarship program for teachers will help as many as 500 students per year. But thats on the condition the students concentrate in certain areas of state education when they graduate. The scholarships will be for between three-thousand and six-thousand dollars per year. In return, the students will have to teach math, science or foreign language or focus on special education. Or, the students will have to work in areas of the state with critical teacher shortages. The program was announced today by Lieutenant Governor Winthrop Rockefeller. Rockefeller says the program will get $1.5 million per year in state money. He says that this year there are 264 qualified applicants.
