ANTI-CONSOLIDATION BILL GETS NEW LIFE

Last week she was one of the loudest voices fighting to keep the governors consolidation plan alive, but now Senator Brenda Gulletts working on an anti-consolidation plan to salvage this special session. Gullett says that she truly did support the tenets of S-B 28, but that bills dead and she wants to support something that has life. She plans to add amendments to house bill 1021. That measure was first passed by the full house weeks ago, but has languished in the senate education committee. That group is led by the sponsor of the governors failed reform package. Gulletts major change to the standards-based proposal would close districts that couldnt meet state standards and force reorganization on them then. If a district fell into that kind of trouble, it would have to merge with a district with at least 500 students.
