The morning after house manuvering gutted his consolidation based reform plans, the governor was on the radio blasting those who opposed his ideas for fixing schools. Mike Huckabee challenged rural school advocates to be ready to pay exorbitant taxes to maintain every ball team and superintendents job that will remain without school reorganization. The sponsor of his bill began a new mission today - trying to find any common ground between the house and senate now that consolidations been killed.
One idea on the table would only make districts of less than 500 students consolidate secretaries, offices and other parts of their administrative units. Another topic being discussed in special meetings is isolated districts. Changes to the number, benefits for and definition of isolated districts had been proposed. Senator Jim Argue says he believes folks on all sides of the talks are negotiating in good faith, but hes not sure the effort will be productive.
