Special Session Day 3 - Funding Agreement?

Updated: January 7, 2009
A day after three funding proposals were presented to lawmakers trying to reform public schools, one senator sees some concensus building. Senate Education Committee chairman Jim Argue says an emerging number of his colleagues are focusing on the model presented by the states consultants. That concept, known as the Picus and Odden matrix, would require around 772 million dollars in new funding to be added to the education budget. Through the matrix, state aid is sent out to districts based on the number of teachers in an area. Argue says more lawmakers are acknowledging that the matrix best complies with requirements in the Lakeview school equity verdict. According to Argue, Lakeview says the state is responsible for providing resources to districts, not just for sending out money. Thats what the matrix tries to do.
