Governor Mike Huckabee says he is
considering changing his school-reform plan to allow more high schools to avoid possible consolidation.
Under a plan announced last month, the governor said that high
schools with fewer than 425 students
should be considered for consolidation if they cannot educate their
children efficiently.
Huckabee told radio listeners today that he thinks its possible
that the number could be lowered to 375 and still meet academic demands with teaching capacity.
In his show on the Arkansas Radio Network, Huckabee also touted
the states Smart Core curriculum initiative. It would raise the
number of required high school graduation courses from 21
to 22 by adding a math course. It also would expand
mandatory testing to measure Arkansas students against those in
other states.
