School Improvement List Gets Shorter

Updated: January 7, 2009
A list of Arkansas schools needing improvement, according to federal standards, has become a bit shorter. Three schools won appeals of their status to the state Education Department. State Education Department officials in late August announced a list of 126 identified as School Improvement Schools, in accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind law. Schools had 30 days to appeal. The remaining 123 on the list must take appropriate corrective action, and some have started working on that. The new law includes school choice and tutoring for students at schools that dont improve. More schools are expected to be added to the list once the Education Department finishes reviewing data. ------ The three schools removed from the list after they appealed are: Ridgeroad Charter Middle School in the North Little Rock School District, Wilson Elementary in the South Mississippi County district, and Belle Point Alternative Center in the Fort Smith district.
