Math Requirements For High School Students

A plan outlined Thursday by the state Education
Department would require most Arkansas high school students to pass
algebra two-level math courses to graduate.
The departments "Smart Core" plan includes 14 math, English,
science and social studies courses. State Education Department
director Ray Simon says the courses would help lower Arkansas rate
of students needing remedial classes when the start college.
Simon shared the plan this morning with members of a joint
legislative committee on education. He told legislators another
advantage of the plan is that it would ensure schools are offering
a broad range college preparatory courses.
