A Possible New Education Plan by the Governor

Updated: January 7, 2009
A revised education reform plan could be released by Governor Huckabee as soon as Friday. Educators say they hope the new package leads to a compromise that can pass the Legislature. Experts estimate Arkansas must spend $847 million dollars more per year to comply with a court order to improve the public school system. Huckabee plans to call legislators to meet in special session December 8th to consider education reforms and ways to fund them. Huckabee said he is working to combine the best of all ideas he has received to overhaul education, and offer specific legislation ahead of the special session. Huckabee has advocated consolidating high schools in districts with fewer than 15-hundred students.
