Updated: January 7, 2009
Arkansas Education Department Director Ray Simon has accepted a nomination by President Bush to a post at the federal Education Department. If he is confirmed by the Senate, Simon will be assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education. Simon has been director of the State Education Department since 1997. Before that, he was superintendent of the Conway School District. Governor Huckabee says he is sorry to lose Simon but says hes gratified that Simons talents have been recognized by the Bush Administration. The governor also says the timing for Simons departure could not be worse. Huckabee plans to call a special session December 8th, to deal with a state Supreme Court decision that calls for overhauling Arkansas system of financing public education. The high court states the school-funding system has been unfair and inadequate.
