Football or School?

Students in one district that may be consolidated under the governors school reform plan are leaving. Theyre Decatur football players who dont want to miss their chance to suit up and have moved on to larger districts. Such moves are a big disappointment to lawmakers working to help Arkansas comply with court mandates to improve education. They see consolidation as a way to boost efficiency and give high schoolers everywhere the rich curriculum they deserve. House Education Committee Chairman Calvin Johnson says folks who would move kids based on policy that hasnt bee enacted, must be awfully afraid of progress. Families say they feel their small schools have a lot to offer. They say they give the personal attention big districts can and provide important focal points for communities.
