A Ballot Initiative for Ed Reform?

Updated: January 7, 2009
The Governor says a vote at the polls may be the best way to find a legally defensible solution to the states school problems. Mike Huckabee spoke out today at the closing conference session of the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators. He said hes concerned lawmakers are focused on finding a good political solution and that wont meet the court standard set by the Lakview verdict. Lakeview requires Arkansas to give each child an adequate and equitable education......and the state just has until January first to devise a plan for that. Hucakbees worried that if a special session were to be held right now, lawmakers would just take the teeth out of the omnibus bill and other important school reforms already in place. He says that would just injure the process even more. Large and small school district reps are meeting to help create their own reform plan to share with the governor. They say theyre optimistic about finding common ground.
