Mega Millions $640M Record Jackpot: Arkansas Facts

By: KARK 4 News
Updated: March 30, 2012
Arkansas lottery officials have revealed some interesting facts about how the Mega Millions $640-million record jackpot could affect the state if an Arkansas player wins it.

If that happens, $50,000 goes to the retailer who sold the winning ticket.

The state would get 7-percent in income tax totaling $44.8-million.

Since 35-percent of Mega Millions sales dollars go to scholarships, about $2-Million has been raised so far during this Mega Millions run, from ticket sales alone.

Lottery officials are hearing stories of heavy traffic toward Arkansas at the Mississippi border (Mississippi has no lottery.) Also, heavy volume in lottery retail locations along the Mississippi border.

Other Facts:
  • Sales since the jackpot run started on January 24 at 9:01 p.m. (when sales for that night's draw ceased) to 11 a.m. today have been $7.3 Million (1/3 to scholarships)
  • Sales yesterday alone were $1.076 Million.
  • Tickets are $1 each, and the Megaplier is $1. Traditionally, about 20-percent of Arkansas players also buy the Megaplier. That means every $1 Million in tickets sold, that would be 800,000 tickets, 200,000 of them with the Megaplier.
  • Overall sales are higher, since many players choose other games when they go in for a Powerball or Mega Millions ticket. Yesterday, and Wednesday, all daily sales were around $2.4 Million, just below $1.1 Million for Mega Millions. An average day is $1.3 Million, so the Arkansas Lottery  hit that WITHOUT the Mega Millions sales added in.
Another fun fact:
Athena Hernandez with the DC lottery confirms to CNN if there is no winner tonight the jackpot will increase to an estimated $975 Million for the drawing on Tuesday April 3rd.
