FAYETTEVILLE - Sophomore pitcher Katy Henry threw a no-hitter as the University of Arkansas softball team defeated Centenary, 1-0, Sunday, March 5 in the final game of the Country Inn and Suites Arkansas Invitational. The Lady Razorbacks (11-8) won the first game of the doubleheader, 3-0.
Henry (6-2) tallied a season-high 13 strikeouts. In the first game, senior Blaire Perry (3-3) had eight strikeouts and allowed only four hits in a complete game performance.
Arkansas softball head coach Jamie Pinkerton said he was pleased with the LadyBacks performance. Currently, Arkansas is enjoying a nine game-winning streak.
"That was a good win against a very good ball club," Pinkerton said. "The key thing is they are learning how to win."
In game one, the LadyBacks took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when senior outfielder Mindy OMalley scored on a sacrifice fly from junior pinch hitter Meagan Harney.
Senior catcher Shana Easley hit a solo home run (3) in the fifth inning giving Arkansas a 2-0 lead. Easley has recorded two home runs in two days. The LadyBacks added a run in the sixth when OMalley hit a two-out triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Junior outfielder Rachel LeMaster led the LadyBack offense with two hits.
In the final game of the tournament, Arkansas recorded the only run of the game when OMalley scored sophomore infielder Dayna Huckabee from second base. OMalleys single was only the second LadyBack hit of the game. With two outs, Huckabee drew a walk and then stole second to give Arkansas a runner in scoring position.
