Hogs Win, Will Face Texas

AUSTIN, Texas. - Arkansas pounded out 16 hits en route to a 9-5 win over Miami University (Ohio) on Friday in the opening game of the NCAA Austin Regional at Disch-Falk Field. Boyce pitched eight strong innings before hitting the wall in the ninth. He allowed four runs on three hits in the ninth before being lifted for James Gilbert. Boyce scattered 11 hits in eight innings, allowing five runs and striking out five. He did not walk a batter, but hit two in the ninth inning. He improves 11-9 on the season and moves into sole possession of second place in school history with 27 career wins. Gilbert recorded the final three outs of the game to earn his first career save. Clint Arnold led the Hogs offense with three hits and two RBI. All of the Razorbacks starters collected at least one hit as Arkansas pounded out five doubles and two triples. Arkansas got off to a quick start with Craig Gentry leading off the game with a double to right field and Brock Bond then drove him in with his first triple of the season down the right-field line. Arnold then singled to right field to plate Bond and give the Hogs an early 2-0 lead. Miami cut the lead in half in the top of the second inning on Paul Frietchs 15th home run of the season. Frietch got a pitch that was up in the zone and deposited it well over the right-field fence. The Hogs tacked on another run in the fourth inning on an infield single by Clint Arnold. Scott Hode doubled home a run in the seventh inning to give the Hogs a 4-1 lead. Blake Parker followed by ripping the first triple of his career to score Hode and chase Graham Taylor from the game. Taylor threw to just one batter and left after walking Clay Goodwin. Brian Walker greeted new pitcher Shorts with a ground-rule double to left field that scored Jake Dugger, who had pinch ran for Parker. Walkers double brought about Miamis third pitching change of the inning as Jeff Day came off for the RedHawks. Taylor pitched 6.1 innings for the RedHawks and allowed six runs - five earned - on 11 hits. He stuck out four and walked one in his first loss (6-1) of the season. Arkansas would tack on three more runs in the eighth inning and held a 9-1 lead as Boyce came back out to pitch the ninth inning. Bond, Danny Hamblin, Hode, Parker and Walker all collected two hits for the Hogs. Nick Schmidt will get the start for Arkansas at 6 p.m. on Saturday against Texas. The Longhorns defeated Quinnipiac 20-2.
