If you think NBC is anxious for you to watch "Smash", that goes double for the show's stars.

"The anticipation is killing me! I just want it out there," says Megan Hilty.

That's because the cast has been waiting for reaction since last March when they filmed the pilot.

"I remember thinking, if this gets picked up, I will be living my dream. It'll be so unbelievable if I get to do this," says Katharine McPhee.

That first episode sold NBC on the show, but they decided to wait until February to launch it.

"I was so thrilled when I heard they were putting us at midseason," says Debra Messing.

That's because it gave this behind the scenes look at the making of a Broadway musical the chance to shoot more than a dozen episodes before the public's even seen the first one.

The network hopes that "Smash" is not just the title of the show, but also its ratings reality.

One of the executive producers of "Smash" is Steven Spielberg, who came up with the idea for the show during the early days of his own career when he worked backstage in musical theater.

"Smash" debuts one week from tonight.
