Families Turn to Welfare Help in Recession

By: Newsroom Solutions
Updated: December 2, 2011
U.S. families turned to welfare assistance during the nation's longest and deepest recession since the Great Depression, according to the Census Bureau.

Participation in the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families fell in the 1990s and leveled off in the early years of this century.

Between 2007 and 2009, the official recession years, participation in TANF jumped a full percentage point.

People got help from other federal assistance programs as well.

The Census Bureau reports most families used benefits for a short period of time.
