Dry Conditions Surround the Natural State

While many kids are hoping for a white Christmas, farmers, marina owners and many others say rain will do. The National Weather Service is ranking this years drought among the top five in Arkansas history. Greers Ferry Lake is down 10 feet from the average for this time of year. Marina managers are constantly moving their docks to protect boats from bottoming out. Although this isn`t the lowest Greers Ferry`s been shorelines are getting bigger and things that used to under water are now decorating the outskirts of the lake. The corps of engineers says these dry conditions can create more dangers on the water until it rains again. "When they go out there`s going to be trees, rocks, rocky points things that run in the water that would normally not be there are hazardous - they need to take real special caution," added Tommy Park, Operations Manager. Since the conditions have been bad since July -- Southwest Power Administration spent over 8 million dollars for power from other resources instead of drawing the lakes down even farther. The dry conditions are being felt across the natural state.
