Jewish Day of Atonement Begins

By: Newsroom Solutions
Updated: October 7, 2011
The Jewish High Holy Day of Atonement arrives at sundown today.

Yom Kippur marks the end of a 10-day period of introspection.

That period began with the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah.

During this period of introspection, Jews are to look deep inside themselves for sins committed in the past year.

Yom Kippur is a solemn holiday in which a portion of the service is for a remembrance of loved ones lost.

Yom Kippur takes on even deeper meaning this year as it falls on the Jewish Sabbath.
